After attending Church School and learning about the basic stories of the bible, it is time for young adults to build upon this foundation. Within the Confirmation program, Junior High students begin to build a sturdy framework by incorporating parents, mentors and pastors during this important time of their faith journey. This is also a time when students begin to go beyond their own congregation and meet other youth during a weekend retreat of worship, service projects, games and Christian music.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a well-rounded program which encompasses:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Mentor Group meetings and activities
  • Faith Experiences
  • Worship notes
  • Serving & learning more about St. John

Thoughout the year, the following are items must be completed. Each of these "tasks" encourage households to grow together in faith:

  • Completing 10 Worship notes
  • Completing 10 Faith in Action sheets
  • Completing 5 “special” Lent worship notes (Ash Wed., Holy Week, or Wed. night worship during Lent)
  • Completing 1 “Book of the Bible” book report

Classroom Instruction

Students attend instructional classes which are taught by pastors, concentrating on the Small Catechism. These classes are held monthly. Parents attend a portion of these classes along with their child. This equips parents to talk about faith at home.

Mentor groups

Mentor groups are formed which consist of 5-6 students and a St. John member. These small groups encourage open faith discussions, and allow all students to be involved in community projects. These groups are fun and very active, while encouraging faith discussions with an adult outside of the home.

"Faith Experience"

Faith Experience is an evening when the students get together and experience their faith through stewardship. This may consist of visiting a nursing home, collecting food for the local pantry, making blankets for hospitalized, or raking leaves for the elderly. This reinforces our belief of "putting our hands and feet to work" for Jesus!

Worship Notes

Worship and being active in the church is important aspect of growing in your faith. Students are expected to worship regularly with an adult. We believe when a student worships with an adult who is significant in his or her life, faith becomes more meaningful and more relevant. Throughout the year, students must complete 10 Worship notes, and 5 additional "special worship" notes during Lent (Wed. night Lenten worship, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week).

regular Sunday worship notes           Wednesday worship notes                                        radio worship notes                         Lent worship notes

Notes need to be signed by a parent or guardian. The parent/guardian should also help the student understand the questions on the worship note form and discuss their written responses. Forms needed to complete these items are available on the Confirmation bulletin board in the Commons Area or by clicking on the respective hotlinks above.

Faith in Action

Putting your "Faith in Action" is basically putting your faith - into action. Beyond the church doors - with friends, family, and even strangers! These are ways we experience our faith in the world. Throughout the year, confirmation students are required to complete 10 Faith in Action sheets :

Faith Interview                            God Sighting                                Movie Review                                       Service Project                             Church Visit

Serving & Learning

Students also become active within the church walls by serving, ushering, baking communion bread, etc. to learn more about the church, become more comfortable with their surroundings and with people they meet along their faith journey. It is a time to learn about the different opportunities to serve within the church and to be active in a favorite area. This bridges a diverse group of congregational members with the Junior High students to form additional relationships within the church.
